Less Good
How ‘Minder Mooi’ Came to Be 🌱🥒
Not all cucumbers that come from the farm look the same. Some are beautifully straight and have the shape people are used to seeing in stores, while others may be a little more curved, smaller, or simply shaped differently. These cucumbers are kept separate and are often sold at a lower price.
During our conversations about the harvest, I regularly heard words such as ‘damaged’, ‘reject’, or ‘unsaleable’. I didn’t really like the way these terms sounded. After all, why should we reject a cucumber simply because it looks different? It can still taste perfectly good and be just as useful.
That’s why I said: “From now on, we will simply call fruits and vegetables that look different ‘Minder Mooi’.” 💚
It sounds friendlier and more positive and, we thought, also a little bit typically Dutch. 🇳🇱😊
And that is how the name ‘Minder Mooi’ came to be within our farm project.
But we don’t want to stop at simply giving them a different name. We want to make good use of as much of our ‘Minder Mooi’ fruit and vegetables as possible. For example, we can offer them at a lower price or use them in dishes, sauces, soups, salads, pickled products, and other food products.
Because ‘Minder Mooi’ does not mean less good. 🌱💚
Anything that is still good, tasty, and usable deserves a purpose instead of ending up in the bin. In this way, we aim to reduce food waste while getting as much value as possible from every harvest.
